As the weather in Fargo starts to heat up, so does the fun to be had in the great outdoors! From golf to birding, follow this itinerary for a full three days of outdoor activities in Fargo to take advantage of.

DAY 1

Morning

Golf

Start the day by hitting the links at one of Fargo-Moorhead’s amazing courses. This is a great way to get out and enjoy the great outdoors at a leisurely pace, walk the course to get a few more steps in, or even head to El Zagal for a round of FootGolf if regular golf isn’t your thing.

Afternoon

Lunch at Brew Bird

Stop by Brew Bird and enjoy yourself on their patio. Brew Bird has a fully gluten-free menu of fried chicken, get a chicken sandwich, or grilled chicken tenders with a side of pimento mac and cheese or rainbow slaw.

Biking

Evening

Dinner at 701 Eateries

Fargo’s newest (and arguably coolest) rooftop bar and restaurant 701 Eateries has a huge space to sit and enjoy a nice cocktail and some dinner.

The rooftop patio is called Camp Lone Tree and is perfect for a nice summer night while the downstairs restaurant, Prairie Kitchen, has a more cozy, Scandinavian vibe with comfort food and Midwest favorites on the menu.

Walk around a park

After dinner, head over to Lindenwood Park for a nice walk under the trees and along the river. While you’re there, find one of the bridges over the river and stand in the middle to be in two states at once!

DAY 2

Morning

Coffee

It’s the morning, and that means coffee! Fargo has many options when it comes to coffee, start this day at Thunder Cofee with a cup of joe out of their drive-thru.

Birding

There’s a wide variety of birds that you can see in the Dakotas and in Fargo specifically. Check out this list of the best parks for birding and choose whichever one you think works best!

Afternoon

Hike in Buffalo River State Park

Just East of Moorhead around 20 miles, you’ll find a hiking gem. Buffalo River State Park is a beautiful prairie conservatory that bisects with the wooded banks of the Buffalo River.

Grand Junction

On your way back into town, stop by Grand Junction in Moorhead for one of the best hot sandwiches in Fargo-Moorhead.

Fishing

After lunch, head to the river and cast a line. The Red River is known for having great Catfishing along with a wide variety of other things to fish for. Check out this guide to Fishing on the Red River for more information.

Evening

Kayaking/Canoeing

Looking for a place to exercise, explore, or simply relax? Grab your kayak and hop on the Red River of the North! There are a couple of options for renting kayaks at Lindenwood Park and Viking Ship Park.

Take out dinner

After your day on the river, you’ll probably be pretty hungry. Grab some gyros from Ishtar Meditteranean and swing by one of the local breweries like Drekker or Junkyard for some off-sale cans and enjoy in a local park or wherever you might be staying.

DAY 3

Morning

Hiking in the Grasslands

Just Southwest of the Fargo-Moorhead area, the Sheyenne National Grasslands is just waiting to be conquered. Hike among the grasslands and enjoy the sunrise with just wildlife as your company.

Adventure Lab or Geocaching

To cap off your outdoor-lover trip in Fargo, join in on the Geocaching bandwagon. The Fargo-Moorhead area is home to the first official geocache tour in North Dakota and Minnesota.

If you’re not quite ready to try Geocaching out, the Adventure Labs are another great way to go on a self-led scavenger hunt. Follow the hints in the app and find the clues at each stop to move onto the next location.


Outdoor activities in North Dakota are not hard to come by. Even though Fargo is an urban city, there’s no shortage of outdoor adventures to be had. So get out there and enjoy all the fun that Fargo has to offer!
