Comstock House

This historic, Victorian-style home – built by Solomon G. Comstock in 1882 – transports you to the very early days of Fargo-Moorhead.

Take a guided tour through this 11-room, two-story home (and one of Fargo-Moorhead’s top attractions!) as your knowledgeable guide describes life in the early days on the prairie.

Learn about the Comstocks, a wealthy family of railroad and academic pioneers, and how they brought business and education opportunities to the community. The women of the family are especially inspiring and impressive.

The Comstock house, which cost $45,000 (over $1,000,000 in today’s world!), was the most lavish building on the block. It was a symbol of prosperity for the growing town of Moorhead.

This museum is just across the river from Fargo, ND, and is one of the must-visit museums in Moorhead, MN.

EXPERIENCES
Yoga on the Lawn
• $5
• Every Monday evening from June-August
• Bring a yoga mat, water, and a towel or blanket

Join an evening yoga class on the Comstock House lawn. Classes are taught by certified instructor Amanda Nordic and designed for all levels of ability.

Class will be cancelled due to rain or temperatures below 60 degrees. Updates will be posted on the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County and Comstock House Facebook pages.

Flashlight Tours
• $10
• Tours are limited to 10 people, children must be accompanied by an adult

Explore the Comstock House after dark on a flashlight tour. With all the lights turned off, guides will bring guests through the house and use flashlights to illuminate artifacts and architectural features along the way. Guests will have access to areas usually not open on tours, including the attic and the basement.

Victorian Christmas Traditions Tours
• $10
• Tours leave at 5:30, 7:00, and 8:30 p.m.
• Tours are limited to 12 people, children must be accompanied by an adult

Explore the Victorian origins of many of today's Christmas traditions with a special tour of the Comstock House. The house will be decorated with Christmas trees, stockings by the fire, mistletoe, and holiday lights. At the end of the tour, enjoy hot chocolate and Christmas cookies.

Celebrate a Victorian Christmas at the historic Comstock House, which will be decorated for the holidays. Learn about the Christmas customs of the Comstock family and other Victorian traditions. Play Victorian parlor games, listen to live music, and enjoy hot cocoa and holiday treats.

• No wifi is available at the Comstock House.
• Strollers and diaper-changing facilities are not available on site.
• A unisex bathroom is available. It is not wheelchair accessible.

FUN FACTS
• The house was built for $45,000… a value of over $1,000,000 in today’s world!
• Solomon Comstock helped to build Bishop Whipple School, which eventually became Concordia College, and he donated the land and sponsored a bill that led to the establishment of Moorhead Normal School, which is now Minnesota State University Moorhead
• Sarah Comstock, Solomon’s wife, secured a donation from Andrew Carnegie to help build the town’s library in 1905
• The Comstocks eldest daughter, Ada, was the first full-time female president of Radcliffe College

HISTORY
We won’t give too much away here, but you’re in for some great history when you visit this Minnesota Historical Society museum. Every room was carefully decorated by the Comstocks and hold many of the original furnishings.
